In 1820 Johnnie Walker opened his own grocers shop after the sale of his fathers farm the year before. Grocers in those days regularly stocked single malts, however these were often inconsistent and unreliable. So Johnnie began blending them to create a consistently fantastic product, proving to be a huge success. Johnnie passed away in 1857 leaving his son Alexander a prosperous business. The world was expanding quickly and Alexander also saw potential. In 1867 he introduced the iconic slanted label and square bottle to set Johnnie Walker blend apart on the shelf. 1908 saw the Alexanders son introduce ‘the striding man’ and renamed each whisky with a coloured labels, as we know today (the blue coming much later in 1992). Johnnie Walker brand became immortalised throughout the 20th century even receiving a royal warrant from King George V. Today Johnnie Walker is one of the best selling whiskies of more than 20 million cases a year and available in almost every country in the world.
