The region is defined within the Scotch Whisky Regulations of 2009. Lowland Region is the area below an imaginary line drawn from the River Clyde in the west and the River Tay in the east. Generally, within the rolling countryside of southern Scotland. These whiskies tend to be lighter and sweeter and are triple distilled and historically used coal instead of peat to fuel fires during the drying and distillation process. The gentler flavours are used blend a lighter profile.
Lowland whiskies tend to use malt and grain which may be blended. Once again new distilleries are coming on board offering more expressions for drinkers to enjoy. Visitors have easy access to the distilleries as they are close to Scotland’s major cities of Edinburgh and Glasgow.
