Highland

Highland is the largest of Scotland’s whisky regions. The region is defined within the Scotch Whisky Regulations of 2009. Highland Region is the area above an imaginary line drawn from the River Clyde in the west and the River Tay in the east. Speyside is within this area and can be classified as either Speyside or Highland. By statute, this includes the peripheral islands of Scotland except for the Isle of Islay.

Whiskies from this region are as diverse as the land occupied by the distilleries from full bodied and sweet from the northern area within the region to the peaty eastern highland. Highland whiskies were produced in smaller stills as barley was scarcer due to the nature of the hills and valleys within the region.
