Yamazaki Distillery

In 1923, Shinjiro Torii, the founder of Suntory and the father of Japanese whisky, built Japan’s first malt whisky distillery in the vale of Yamazaki.Taketsuru Masataka was hired as factory director in 1924. Taketsuru studied at Glasgow university learning how to make whisky and married a Scottish woman Rita Cowan before settling into family life in his native Japan. Their premier whisky was completed in 1929.
