This whisky has a unique nose of truffles, complemented by the robust tang of bitter marmalade and the sticky sweetness of resin. there’s a fragrant layer of potpourri mingling with the weighty aroma of oloroso sherry, notes of dark chocolate and clove develop with time, complimented by a lavish tapestry of flavours, from the herbal bitterness of heather roots to the verdant notes of cigar leaves, sweetened by honey and toffee apples; hints of rich plum wine and a crackling of black pepper add complexity, along with a subtle suggestion of rancio on the palate, and topped off by a symphony of fruity, marmalade flavours on the finish.

In 1923, Shinjiro Torii, the founder of Suntory and the father of Japanese whisky, built Japan’s first malt whisky distillery in the vale of Yamazaki.Taketsuru Masataka was hired as factory director in 1924. Taketsuru studied at Glasgow university learning how to make whisky and married a Scottish woman Rita Cowan before settling into family life in his native Japan. Their premier whisky was completedin 1929. The distillery’s location between Japan’s ancient capital of Kyoto and Osaka offers pure waters, diversity of climate and high humidity the ideal environment for the maturation of good whisky. Today, Suntory’s Yamazaki is the most popular whisky in Japan and is enjoyed by whisky connoisseurs the world over. Suntory was gone on to grow expontentially with three main ranges, Yamazaki, Hibiki and Hakushu. Furthermore, they have gone on to merge with Beam Inc and acquire several Scottish distilleries. Today the distillery is open to visitors for tours and tastings year round. Some free tours are available but operate on a ballot scheme, while others are available for a fee (Suntory Holdings LTD, 2024).
