Old Pulteney Distillery

Known as the ‘maritime malt’ Old Pulteney is found on the most northerly shores of Scotland in the fishing port of Wick, Caithness.
The pure and soft water from Loch Hempriggs, carried via lade made by the famous Thomas Telford in 1807 is key to the processes at Old Pulteney.  Founded in 1826 by James Henderson in the newly developed Pulteneytown area of Wick. At one time the distillery was only accessible by sea, before modern roads. Barley was brought to the distillery by sea and many of the stillmen were also herring fishermen. Alongside booming herring trade of the early 20th century the distillery grew from strength to strength. Until 1920, under the Temperence (Scotland) Act 1913 saw all pubs and the distillery closed. 1947 saw the end of prohibition and a new owner Robert ‘Bertie’ Cumming who reopened the distillery with production resumed in 1951. There has been multiple changes in ownership until the current owners Inver House Distillers took control in 1995. In 1997 Old Pulteney’s flagship 12 year old was released signifying a new age for the brand. Today Pulteney remains steadfast, dedicated to producing a spirit that celebrates the heritage and heart of Wick.
Old Pulteney welcome visitors year round to the distillery for tours, tasting and experiences(Old Pulteney 2024).
