Founded in 1839 by Sir Alexander Matheson Dalmore (meaning ‘big meadowland’ in gaelic) can be found overlooking the Cromarty firth in Alness, 20 miles north of Inverness. Dalmore’s signature 12 point stag represents the distillery’s regal legacy. In 1263 the stag emblem was gifted to Colin of Kintail, 1st of Clan McKenzie for saving the life of King Alexander III from a charging stag. In 1867, descendants of Clan McKenzie took control of the distillery and implemented the stag to represent their commitment to quality. Today it is owned and operated by Whyte & Mackay. Master Distiller Richard Paterson, a pioneer in the art of cask curation, has been the creative force behind The Dalmore for nearly five decades. Inspired by the vision of The Dalmore’s founder, Sir Alexander Matheson, and the achievements of the Mackenzie family who came before him, Richard is admired across the globe for his passion and innovative flair. Our current Master whisky maker Gregg Glass continues an unbroken chain of visionary whisky makers. Under the expert eye of the Dalmore’s whisky makers, the years are put to work: time and cask and artistry- together creating an unparalleled single malt (The Dalmore, 2024).
