Strathclyde Distillery

Originally set up to produce neutral grain spirit (for gin and similar uses). It later began producing whisky when the company acquired the Long John brand in 1936. In 1956 the distillery (via Schenley Industries) installed malt whisky stills and produced a malt whisky under the name Kinclaith from 1958. Kinclaith ceased production in 1975 when the distillery was sold to Whitbread, and its stills/malt operation removed to make way for more grain whisky production. Strathclyde remains notable for being Glasgow’s only operational distillery making grain whisky. Strathclyde is principally a grain whisky distillery (rather than a malt whisky distillery). There are very few official single-distillery bottlings from Strathclyde itself (i.e., under the Strathclyde name). Most of what exists is by independent bottlers.
