Macallam Distillery

In 1824, the distillery was licensed (one of the first in Scotland) to Alexander Reid, a barley farmer and teacher. Originally called ‘Maghellan’ from ‘magh’ gaelic for fertile ground and ‘ellan’ referring to the Monk, St Fillan. St Fillan was strongly associated with a church the stood in the grounds until the 1400s. In fact archeological investigation in 2014 found evidence of settlements on the site dating back to the bronze age and even evidence of people on site in the Mesolithic era, so people have been in this magical site for thousands of years.
Macallan distillery started life as the Elchies Distillery on 6 acres of the Easter Elchies estate. Close to Craigellachie in Speyside, Scotland. The estate now covers 390 acres; 90 of which are sown with exclusive minstrel barley variety in the spring make the whisky.
The river Spey, one of Scotland’s most famous salmon rivers, borders the estate to the south and south-east. From its founding, through the subsequent owners of the distillery in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries and into the present century, the distillery has been recognised for its outstanding quality above all else. Today this remains the foundation for the worldwide fame of The Macallan making their whiskies highly sought after and collectible.
In 2018 innovation found Macallan once more with the opening of the contemporary, consciously built distillery to  welcome guests thoughtfully and carefully. Visiting Macallan is by appointment only but can be booked on their website for a variety of experiences (Macallan, 2024)
