Bowmore distillery presents Bowmore Aston Martin 22-year-old Edition 3 2023 51%, released in 2023. There were an unknown number of bottles in this release.
This whisky has a unique nose of a step up in richness and complexity compared to the bowmore 18 years old, a combination of treacle, toasted nuts and chinese roasted chestnuts. notes of wood polish indicate a well-aged spirit, along with a touch of savoury miso notes. it’s also mildly leathery, reminiscent of upholstery in a new car. all in all, the aromas are remarkably smooth, elegant and quite distinguished, complimented by medium bodied,revelaing a deep, rich influence of oloroso and px sherry. opening with the sweetness of a diverse array of both dark fruit and stewed fruits, and brown sugar syrup. and while these flavours are rich, they are clean and quite balanced, not overwhelming, closely resembling old sherried whiskies of the pre-1980s era when very high quality sherry casks were available to whisky makers. subtle smoke and black tea on the palate, and topped off by a a clean, dessert wine, peppermint, oak dryness and a hint of leather finish.

Founded over two centuries ago in 1779, the distillery was the first recorded distillery on the island of Islay (pronounced ‘eye-la’) and is one of the oldest in the whole of Scotland. Islay malts are renowned for their peaty smokiness and Bowmore is no exception. The distillery carefully smokes it’s malt in a peat-fired kiln, just as its ancestors did over 200 years ago. Bowmore was the first planned village in the country, founded in 1768 and the distillery produced its first Islay Malt 11 years later in 1779. You will find the distillery on the shores of Loch Indaal, a sea loch that opens out into the Atlantic Ocean. Its proximity to the sea plays a vital role in shaping the final character of our spirit, which breathes in the salty sea air all the while it’s maturing. The distillery houses a vistor centre and bar and is open for tours year round (Bowmore, 2024)
