In 1892 William Grant built the Balvenie distillery in the abandoned Balvenie New House, just 5 years after founding the neighbouring Glenfiddich distillery. The Distillery lies near Dufftown, Speyside and sources water from the river Fiddich. The Balvenie is not only a sister to Glenfiddich Distillery but also on Glen Kininvie also in Dufftown. 1st of Mary 1893 saw the beginning of production at the distillery. 1923 saw the passing of William Grant and his son John takes the helm beginning expansion. Most whisky is used for blends and part of the wider Grant company until 1971 when the first Balvenie single malt is released. The 80s under David Stewart, the 4th Malt master experimentation and innovation continues, namely the maturation of the Balvenie in two different wood types in quick succession, creating the ‘Balvenie Classic’. Dunnage warehouse 24 can be found on the site of the old Balvenie Castle, the stones of which were used for its construction. Today the Balvenie welcomes visitors for tour and tasting by appointment only, but visitors can also experience the visitor centre less than a mile along the road at Glenfiddich distillery (William Grant and sons, 2024).
