A PERFUMED FORAY INTO ARDBEG’S FLORAL SIDE

This soft and floral single cask is the fragrant result of Ardbeg’s first experiment with port casks. The whisky’s story began on Monday 13th July 2009, when its smoky, balanced spirit flowed from Ardbeg’s still. Then with a complex, velvety whisky in their minds, the Whisky Creation Team laid a parcel of spirit down in second-fill port casks, never before used to age Ardbeg. But after 14 years of ageing, one cask’s sweet, floral layers set it apart from the rest.

Combining notes of sugared plums, spearmint and roses with restrained hints of smoke, Cask No. 3918 showcases Ardbeg as never before.

Non-chill filtered at 57.9% ABV.

Tasting Notes

Nose: Fragrant, perfumed and sweet. Milk chocolate, honeycomb and sugared plums are contrasted by notes of incense and spearmint. A few drops of water release aromas of rose and honeysuckle, with echoes of Ardbeg’s signature smoke.

Palate: A soft, velvety and slightly drying texture is followed by a complexity of flavours. Notes of butter candy give way to smoked plums and chocolate truffles. Then aniseed, menthol and woodsmoke emerge, alongside subtle hints of burnt toast, black peppercorns and cumin.

Finish: Finally, softer tones of lightly smoked pears and walnut oil come to the fore.

Description

Ardbeg Single Cask # 3918 14 year old Port Barrique 70cl / 57.9%abv (268 bottles)

Ardbeg Distillery.

The distillery can be found in a small cove on the south coast of Islay. It was in 1815 that the distillery was established and founded by John McDougal. Despite going on to sell in 1838, Ardbeg continued to be ran by John’s children. In 1853 Ardbeg boasted the first female distiller’s in Scotland after the death of Alexander, their elder brother. The family also went on to buy back the distillery in 1922 remaining at the helm until 1977. Following financial difficulties the distillery had a hiatus from 1981 to 1989, when distillation resumed it was on a much smaller scale. The distillery was sold again in 1997 to Glenmorangie Co. and restored to its former grandeur and as we know it today. Ardbeg has gone on to win many awards and enjoys releasing bottles to celebrate contemporary events. In 2021 a new stillhouse is completed doubling capacity. They are open year round in their visitor centre, bar and tours (Ardbeg 2023).
